Artist's Statement

I’ve been an artist since I was three years old and drew a picture of my ear ache. I don’t remember a time when art was not exciting for me. I knew I wanted art to be my profession, but I clearly remember the day the fire of my passion for creating art began burning, taking over my life for good. I was twenty and doing clay sculpture.

In 1977 I moved from New England to Tucson. I continued to do sculpture, but the vibrant color of the landscape, the culture, and the people inspired me to work with color. I began with oil pastel and eventually started to paint in oils.

In 2001 I saw the movie “Pollock” and had an epiphany. I went home and began a painting of trees. Then I let my mind go free with the colors and the feel of the work - a kind of stream of consciousness painting. Perhaps abstraction is the purest form of expression in painting, but I find it works better to infuse emotion into my work if I keep representation a part of it. Besides, I especially enjoy rendering.

I love the act of creating a work of art - the essence of paint, of clay or paper. I love the way the color, the form, the texture and composition, create an emotion you can’t explain in words. My work is about aesthetics. I’m not making statements with my art. I’m not making social comment. Rather, I wish to arrest the viewer with a visual feast.
